| Overview | This patent discloses a process for making dibutyl ether from fermentation broth by contacting dry 1-butanol with an acid catalyst such as homogeneous or heterogeneous catalyst. The dry 1-butanol is produced with greater efficiency by utilizing renewable feedstock such as corn stalks, corn cobs, etc., via fermentation using Clostridium sp. The dry 1-butanol is a used as a reactant to produce dibutyl ether which is used as additive in transportation fuels. The process comprises, A) obtaining a fermentation broth comprising 1-butanol, B) separating dry 1-butanol from the fermentation broth to form separated dry 1-butanol by distillation, C) contacting the separated dry 1-butanol of step (B), optionally in the presence of a solvent, with an acid catalyst at a temperature of about 50° to 450°C and a pressure from about 0.1 to 20.7 MPa to produce a reaction product comprising dibutyl ether and D) recovering dibutyl ether from the reaction product. |
