| Overview | This patent discloses a process for the continuous biological production of lipids, hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon like material including hydrocarbon biofuels, by anaerobic fermentation of carbohydrates using micro-organisms. The process is carried out in an upflow reactor with recirculation over the column reactor. Advantageously, the process results in considerable reduction in investment and operational costs, thus enabling commercial and technical feasibility of the process. The method comprises, A) fermenting the substrate continuously and anaerobically using microorganisms in an aqueous medium that flows in upward direction in a column type reactor, B) recovering the lipids, hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon like material from step (A), thereby separating the fermentation gas, the micro-organisms, the lipids, hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon like material from each other under conditions that coalescence of the hydrocarbon material or hydrocarbon like material is promoted. |
