| Overview | This patent discloses a process for obtaining lipid, in particular oil containing omega-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids like DHA from microorganisms. The method advantageously does not use an organic solvent and hence reducing the overall production cost of lipid extraction. Advantageously, the present invention allows fermentation of microorganisms and isolation of lipids carried out in a single vessel. The method includes, A) lysing cells of the microorganisms to produce a lysed cell mixture, b) treating the lysed cell mixture to produce a phase separated mixture comprising a heavy layer and a light layer, c) separating the heavy layer from the light layer and d) obtaining the lipid from the light layer. |
