Geographical region Europe
Subject Biodiesel production
Published date Jul 9, 2008
Title Methods for producing biodiesel
Patent Application Number EP1942095 A2
Assignee Univ Carnegie Mellon, USA
Relevance Method for converting feedstock having carboxylic acid and triglyceride into biodiesel using an esterification process and a transesterification process.
Type of claims Publication
Overview This patent discloses a method of converting a carboxylic acid to an alkyl ester using an esterification process. Advantageously, the invention enhances and improves the yield rate and reduces the reaction time over existing biodiesel transesterification and esterification techniques. Application of microwave energy or radio frequency (RF) provides significant increase in process rates, higher conversion levels by activating ionic catalyst site. The method comprising esterification process which includes, A) mixing the feedstock with an alcohol to produce a reactant mixture, B) contacting the reactant mixture with an acid catalyst, C) applying RF or microwave energy (400 MHz - 5 GHz) to one of the carboxylic acid, the alcohol, the catalyst, the mixture and a combination thereof to convert the carboxylic acid to a biodiesel and D) performing a transesterification process to convert the triglyceride to a biodiesel.
